PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Former City Commissioner Charlie Hales has secured one of two slots in the runoff for Portland mayor, and state Rep. Jefferson Smith appeared poised to grab the second.
Hales and Smith led New Seasons Market co-founder Eileen Brady and several lesser-known candidates.
Brady was the early front-runner thanks to the popularity of New Seasons and a fundraising advantage, but her rivals surged late in the race to overtake her lead.
The top two candidates will face off in the November general election to replace Sam Adams, who is not seeking a second term.
