SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A Salem, Ore., food processor says its decision to stop packing canned green beans will eliminate at least 200 seasonal jobs and possibly as many as 140 year-round jobs.

Peter Truitt owns Truitt Brothers with his brother David. He said Tuesday the canned green bean business hasn’t been profitable for some time.

He tells the Statesman Journal that the cannery will continue to pack non-seasonal products, such as pumpkin and Washington-grown garbanzo, pinto, kidney and black beans.

Last year, Truitt Brothers stopped canning pears and cherries in Salem.

In addition to the seasonal worker job losses, company officials say the decision could mean the loss of about 140 salaried and hourly employees. David Truitt says the timing of those layoffs has yet to be determined. Some of those employees might be moved to other jobs.
