EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The retrial of a Eugene woman accused of killing her newborn child has reached its midpoint, with jurors watching a videotape of her confessing to the killing.
The Register-Guard reported (http://bit.ly/KPgAes ) the prosecution in the trial of 24-year-old Angelica Swartout rested Tuesday after showing the tape.
Swartout’s lawyer says she made the confession in 2010 when she was tired, hungry and stressed. The woman has since testified she faked a pregnancy to win affection within her family.
The prosecution alleges Swartout delivered the baby, suffocated it and discarded it in a trash bin at the hotel where she worked. Police were unable to find remains.
