SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Salem Historic Landmarks Commission approved plans Thursday to transform a 116-year-old building at Oregon State Hospital into a memorial for the cremated remains of patients.
The Statesman Journal reports (http://is.gd/mJuqbz) some preservationists had opposed plans to install a large plastic glass window to allow visitors to see the urns for 3,600 former patients.
In its history, the building has been used as a paint shop and infirmary.
The cost of the memorial is funded through a program that directs 1 percent of state construction funds to works of art.
