The Washington Association of School Administrators on Friday will present an award to a Vancouver nonprofit.

Share, which runs housing and outreach programs and provides daily meals for homeless and low-income people in the Vancouver area, was selected to receive the 2012 WASA Community Leadership Award for the Columbia River Region.

The award recognizes Share’s “extraordinary contributions to education and the students of Vancouver School District” through Share’s Backpack Program, the nonprofit announced.

The backpack program provides food to children. About 1,300 packs of nonperishable food are distributed to each of the 66 schools participating in the program. The packs are discreetly given out on Friday after school to ensure that children and their families have food to eat over the weekend.

Donate food for the program at Share’s Volunteer Center, 1708 Main St., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, or donate money at Share.
