NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Two pieces of dynamite spotted in a passenger’s carry-on bag at Newark Liberty International Airport turned out to be fireworks.

TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says the explosives appeared on a checkpoint X-ray machine Thursday.

Fireworks are prohibited in either carry-on or checked baggage.

Farbstein says officials confiscated the fireworks. The passenger was allowed to continue his flight to Salt Lake City and then on to Spokane, Wash.

Meanwhile, screeners at Newark found an air rifle broken down in three checked suitcases on Wednesday.

Passengers are permitted to transport unloaded firearms in checked bags. However, Farbstein says the passenger surrendered the gun and flew on to London and then Athens.
