US men, women lose in badminton tourneys in China

WUHAN, China (AP) — U.S. men and women lost Sunday in international badminton matches.

The men were defeated by South Korea 5-0 in the Thomas Cup. The American women fell by the same score to Japan in the Uber Cup.

On the men’s side, Denmark defeated South Africa 5-0 in its opening group matches. China also started with a 5-0 win over England while Japan downed New Zealand 5-0.

In the Uber Cup, which is held at the same time, China’s No. 1-ranked Wang Yihan dropped just three points against Kerry-Lee Harrington and led her team to a 5-0 win over South Africa. South Korea topped Australia 5-0.

In the day’s only close match, Netherlands won its last three matches to beat Taiwan 3-2.
