Talking Points: Spurs keep on rolling

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

LeBron James turns in an epic playoff performance, the Celtics muster the will for a crucial Game 5 win, the Lakers battle for their playoff lives … and the Spurs roll along.

Ho hum.

San Antonio on Sunday completed a sweep of the Los Angeles Clippers, running their winning streak to 18 games. Not that anybody has noticed. The Spurs are so free of drama, so business-like in their approach, that it is easy to overlook their greatness.

It has been that way throughout the Tim Duncan/Gregg Popovich era — an era that includes four NBA titles. Whether or not the Spurs add a fifth championship — and they have to be considered the favorites — their excellence over the past 14 years has been remarkable.

The Mariners have been hitting the ball a little bit lately. But if you need a reminder of how woeful their offense has been, consider this: Justin Smoak is garnering some praise for a mild hot streak that raised his average to .218 entering Monday’s game.

For a little perspective, Mario Mendoza, he of the infamous “Mendoza Line,” had a career average of .215.
