Schiavone and Medina Garrigues win in Strasbourg

STRASBOURG, France (AP) — Three-time champion Anabel Medina Garrigues and second-seeded Francesca Schiavone reached the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International on Wednesday.

The fourth-seeded Spaniard labored to a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (2) win against Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei, while Schiavone swept aside Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic 6-1, 6-2.

Medina Garrigues will meet Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the last eight after she rallied past Israel’s Shahar Peer 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, while Schiavone takes on Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, who upset No. 8 Tamira Paszek of Austria 6-2, 6-0.

Also, Alexandra Panova of Russia beat Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, Ayumi Morita of Japan defeated Virginie Razzano of France 6-1, 6-3, and American Sloane Stephens topped Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
