QUEBEC CITY (AP) — The IOC says Kuwaiti athletes can compete under the Olympic flag at the London Games.

Kuwait’s Olympic committee has been suspended by the IOC since 2010 because of government interference.

Pere Miro, the IOC’s director of relations with national Olympic committees, tells The Associated Press that the IOC executive board resolved the matter Thursday.

If Kuwait remains suspended, the athletes will compete as “independent Olympic athletes” and march in London’s opening ceremony under the Olympic flag. Miro says Kuwait has eight athletes who have qualified for London.

In 2000, athletes from East Timor competed under the Olympic flag at the Sydney Games.
