SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Dominican relief pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo says he has his U.S. visa and will be returning to the Miami Marlins.
Oviedo had been caught playing under a fake identity and his return had been in doubt. He said Friday that he had received a visa from the U.S. government and would be in Miami on Monday.
The 30-year-old pitcher says he has to serve a suspension for using the false identity but he’s not yet certain of the length.
Oviedo used the name Leo Nunez for seven major league seasons. He says he did it in order to play professionally. He has a $6 million, one-year contract with the Marlins, who have kept him on the restricted list.
