BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong is getting pins in her broken collarbone after crashing out of the Exergy Tour, a mishap that’s put a question mark on her hopes of riding in the London Olympics.
Armstrong’s surgery on Friday morning was to stabilize a mid-shaft clavicle fracture.
It’s a common cycling injury, one riders can recover from quickly.
Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong suffered a similar injury in 2009 and was racing a month later.
Still, Kristin Armstrong’s injury just before USA Cycling’s June 15 announcement of the American Olympic team could complicate the selection committee’s decision.
On Thursday, Tara Whitten led a Canadian sweep of the top three spots in the prologue.
The five-day race continues Friday with a 76.7-mile ride through wine country near the Snake River.
