TUZLA, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — Authorities in Bosnia say they have arrested a couple for physically mistreating and keeping a young German woman imprisoned for years.

The spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Tuzla, Admir Arnautovic, told The Associated Press on Sunday that the 19-year-old girl was rescued after villagers tipped off authorities.

He says Milenko Marinkovic, 52, and his wife Slavojka, 45, were detained on suspicion of illegal imprisonment in a particularly cruel way.

He says the girl was “disoriented” when police found her and had clearly visible injuries. He says she is recovering.

Villagers in Karavlasi told media the couple treated the girl like a slave, and she was made to sleep with pigs and pull a horse cart while whipped. Media reported the girl is the daughter of Marinkovic’s first wife.
