DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it is getting ready to announce a marketing deal between Chevrolet and the Manchester United soccer club.

The company has scheduled a press conference with the popular team on Thursday in Shanghai. GM’s marketing chief also will make a sports announcement in Detroit.

GM wouldn’t give details on Wednesday.

The Manchester United announcement likely is part of GM’s broader marketing strategy. The company recently said it would stop advertising on Facebook and during the Super Bowl.

Manchester United says it’s the most popular sports franchise in the world. A recent survey taken for the United Kingdom-based club found that its fans have doubled to 659 million — nearly one-tenth of the world’s population.

Many fans live in emerging countries like China, GM’s largest market.
