OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The husband of Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire is recovering from surgery to remove recently discovered cancer in his colon.

The governor said in a statement Wednesday that Mike Gregoire was expected to make a full recovery after doctors were able to remove the cancerous part of the colon.

Gregoire said it has been a difficult time for the family. She the finding serves as a scary but important reminder about the importance of cancer screening. Mike Gregoire’s cancer was discovered during a colonoscopy, and he showed no symptoms prior to that screening.

Gregoire herself learned eight years ago that she had breast cancer and also made a full recovery.
