KANGWONLAND, South Korea (AP) — St. Moritz has won the rights to host Alpine skiing’s world championships in 2017.

The International Ski Federation’s ruling council chose the Swiss resort ahead of Are, Sweden. Officials from Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, withdrew their bid before the vote.

St. Moritz and Cortina were both competing for a third straight time to host the biennial event.

St. Moritz last hosted the Alpine worlds in 2003.

Earlier, the Finnish town of Lahti was chosen to stage the 2017 Nordic skiing world championships.

Spain’s Sierra Nevada was the only bidder for the 2017 freestyle and snowboard worlds.
