LONDON (AP) — The Society for Black Lawyers has put forward a 10-point plan to tackle racism in British soccer.
The plan comes amid a backdrop of racism-related troubles, most notably from former England captain John Terry, and alleged “inappropriate language” by referee Mark Clattenburg in a match between Chelsea and Manchester United.
The points include imposing six- to nine-month bans for those guilty of racial abuse, and the creation of a representative association for black members of the game at all levels.
The society also suggests alterations to the way referees operate, as they suggest referees and assistants be recorded during the game, and also be given power to call off games when the crowd is racially abusive.
