BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Tab Hamilton scored 18 points on six first-half 3-pointers and Frank Eaves added 16 points in his college debut as Appalachian State routed Montreat 86-54 on Friday night.

After struggling to pull away from Carson-Newman in an exhibition Monday night, the Mountaineers surged to a 28-5 lead with 11:21 to go in the first half.

Appalachian State expanded the cushion to 28 points before Tyler Hawkins hit a 3-pointer for the Cavaliers just before the break.

Montreat, an NAIA school which counted the game as an exhibition, scored the first four points of the second half to cut the deficit to 21, but could get no closer.

Nathan Healy added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Jay Canty grabbed 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who won the battle of the boards 48-31.

Appalachian State forced 26 turnovers.

La’Bris Adams had 15 points and Justin Ashford 11 for the Cavaliers.
