ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Derrick Henry scored a career-high 26 points and Winthrop held Division II foe St. Andrews to 16 first-half points and won 80-48 Saturday in the Eagles’ season opener.

Gideon Gamble added 12 points for the Eagles, Christian Farmer came off the bench for 11 and Andre Smith chipped in 10.

Winthrop opened the game on an 8-2 run and quickly pushed that lead to 25-9 behind a dunk from Farmer. St. Andrews (0-3) wouldn’t get any closer as the Eagles held the Knights to just seven points the rest of the half.

The Eagles shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field, compared to 33.3 percent (17 of 51) for St. Andrews, and outrebounded the Knights 45-32.

Demetrius Monroe led St. Andrews with 17 points but the Knights committed 17 turnovers and allowed Winthrop to score 34 points in the paint.

St. Andrews counted the game as an exhibition.
