Wyoming cruises past Western State 62-42

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Derrious Gilmore scored a career-high 19 points, Leonard Washington chipped in with 16 and Wyoming cruised to a 62-42 season opening victory Saturday over visiting Western State (Colo.).

Gilmore was 7 of 11 from the field and had four rebounds, four assists and four steals while Washington added seven rebounds and three blocks to his stat line.

Western State took a 13-12 lead off a Bernard Webb dunk with 8:13 to play in the first half but Wyoming answered with a 12-3 run over the next 4:55 capped off by two made free throws by Larry Nance Jr. to make it 24-16.

The Mountaineers chipped away at Wyoming’s lead to trail 28-24 at the half but the Cowboys outscored Western State 20-5 in the first 11:19 of the second half and never looked back.

Joseph Charles scored 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench in the loss for Western State.
