SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have ended the disappointing tenure of Chone Figgins in the Northwest, designating the veteran for assignment with one year remaining on his contract.

Seattle made the move on Tuesday night, one of a number of moves to get its 40-man roster set. The Mariners also designated outfielder Scott Cousins, who was claimed off waivers from Toronto on Nov. 6.

Figgins never found success in Seattle after signing a $36 million, four-year contract in 2009. He has $8 million remaining on his deal. General manager Jack Zduriencik says that Figgins just became an “expendable piece,” as the Mariners moved to protect some younger prospects on their 40-man roster.

Figgins hit just .227 in 304 games over three seasons with the Mariners. He could be traded in the next 10 days but will likely be released.
