Letter: Retract the Norquist pledge

The Columbian
Published: November 23, 2012, 4:00pm

How can we ever hope to solve our fiscal problems and fix the deficit, and also lower our unemployment when many Republican members of the House of Representatives, including our Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, have signed a pledge to Grover Norquist, a Washington, D.C., lobbyist and political activist, to never, ever, for any reason, agree to increase taxes for anyone.

Let’s ask Herrera Beutler to revoke her pledge to Norquist, and to challenge her colleagues in the House to do the same so they can truly work for solving this country’s problems. I think the only pledge a member of Congress should make is to the citizens of the district she represents.
