Clark students help in the garden

Hazel Dell — A Clark College health class helped prepare the Hazel Dell School and Community Garden for winter this season. Twenty college students, from Kristen Myklebust and Sara Gerlt-Schroeder’s Health 100 classes, worked in the garden spreading bark, pruning plants and weeding. Washington State University Master Gardeners Bobbi Bellomy and Barbara Nordstrom led the work session. The garden, at the southeast corner of Hazel Dell Elementary School, 511 Anderson Road, once housed a Vancouver Public Schools maintenance shop and storage area for playground equipment. In 2004, the school district teamed with WSU Clark County Extension’s Food Sense/4-H School and Community Gardens program. With the help of grants, a garden and greenhouse were built to foster educational opportunities and benefit the community. There are 24 raised planting beds for community members and school staff. The harvest from an additional five communal beds is shared by gardeners and a local homeless shelter.
