Letter: We’re running out of options

During the recent election campaign, we heard reference to the deficit from all sides, always expressed in trillions of dollars, but most of us don’t really grasp the real value of that number.

The United States is currently in a negative financial position with a deficit of $16 trillion.

We can’t buy a lotto ticket and get out of this one.

We own it, all citizens of the U.S.A. It doesn’t belong to any political party, just you and me, our neighbors, and our families.

We can only tax ourselves and reduce government spending to begin a reduction of the deficit. There’s no other options.

The collective danger we now face, regardless of party affiliation, is letting politicians add to our current taxes for additional government programs or spending, rather than using added taxation to decrease our deficit as they should.
