DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Fred Couples, captain of the United States side in the Presidents Cup in a year at Muirfield Village, says he has asked Michael Jordan and tournament host Jack Nicklaus to serve as assistant captains.

Veteran tour player Jay Haas has accepted an assistant role.

Couples rated Jordan as a longshot choice. The former Chicago Bulls star served under Davis Love III along with Couples on last weekend’s losing U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Nicklaus, a four-time captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team, didn’t take Couples’ offer seriously but said he would still be an active adviser to the Americans.

Love will try to make the U.S. team as a player but could still serve as Couples’ assistant.
