Stony Brook beats Charleston Southern 49-7

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — Kyle Essington threw for a career high five touchdowns to lead Stony Brook past Charleston Southern 49-7 Saturday night.

Stony Brook (5-1, 1-0 Big South Conference) scored on its opening possession when Essington found Kevin Norrell for 19 yards. Essington finished 13 of 19 with 263 yards. Norrell caught eight passes for a career high 214 yards and two touchdowns.

The Seawolves added to their lead in the second quarter behind Miguel Maysonet’s 1-yard run. Maysonet finished with 88 yards on 11 carries, etching his name in the history books by becoming Stony Brook’s and the Big South’s all-time leader rusher with 3,649 yards.

Charleston Southern (1-4, 0-1) scored its lone touchdown of the game in the second quarter when Malcolm Dixon found Will Hunt for a 28-yard pass, cutting the lead to 14-7.

But Stony Brook outscored Charleston Southern 35-0 the rest of the way.
