BOSTON (AP) — Brad Bates is the new athletic director at Boston College after 10 years in that post at Miami (Ohio).
Bates was named on Tuesday to succeed Gene DeFilippo, who retired on Sept. 30 after 15 years in the position. He made the decision to step down after being diagnosed with a treatable form of melanoma.
During Bates’ tenure, 14 of Miami’s 18 teams won at least one conference championship and the football team made consecutive bowl appearances in 2003 and 2004 for the first time in almost 30 years.
Bates played football at Michigan after walking on to the team then stayed on as a graduate assistant. He worked at Vanderbilt from 1985-2002 in a variety of administrative positions, including senior associate athletic director.
