Zheng beats Sanchez to advance at Japan Open

OSAKA, Japan (AP) — Second-seeded Zheng Jie of China advanced to the second round of the Japan Open with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Maria Jose Martina Sanchez of Spain on Tuesday.

Zheng broke her opponent three times in the final set to wrap up the win in 2 hours, 43 minutes at the Utsubo Tennis Center and will face France’s Pauline Parmentier in the second round.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Italy’s Camila Giorgi 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the day’s only upset, wild-card Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand beat fifth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2.
