HOUSTON (AP) — Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips says the block by New York Jets guard Matt Slauson that ended the season of Houston linebacker Brian Cushing was “unnecessary.”
Cushing tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in the Texans’ 23-17 win Monday night on a low, rolling hit by Slauson. Cushing was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
Slauson was not penalized on the play. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Wednesday that the play is being reviewed.
Phillips said Thursday that “it’s just unnecessary to hit a defensive player when he can’t see you.”
