LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. luge, skeleton and bobsled teams took their first runs of the season in Lake Placid on Friday, opening day for the sliding track at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.
Luge Olympian Chris Mazdzer was first down the ice, on a day where flurries fell in the Adirondacks. Mazdzer said it “felt pretty sweet.”
Some American athletes have already been on tracks in Europe and Canada in recent days. The track in Lake Placid was not scheduled to open until Monday, though conditions allowed for workers to finish the ice-making process earlier than planned.
It’s a hectic few weeks for all three teams. Luge holds its national championships in Lake Placid on Oct. 26-28, and the bobsled and skeleton teams open the World Cup season at the track on Nov. 8.
