OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The struggling United Football League has announced it is postponing the second half of its season until spring.
Each of the second-tier professional league’s four teams has played four of eight regular-season games. UFL founder and chairman William Hambrecht said Saturday that the remaining four games and championship game would be played in the spring.
The UFL plans to return to a fall schedule in 2013.
As of last week, players and coaches had not been paid. Players earn $3,500 a game.
The league said it didn’t have sufficient funds to cover the high cost of workmen’s compensation insurance and other costs. The league said its priority is to pay coaches, players and staff.
Teams are in Omaha, Sacramento, Las Vegas and Norfolk, Va.
