Community Sports Notebook: Royal Oaks quartet claims OGA Team Championship

A team from Royal Oaks Country Club won the 85th Oregon Golf Association Team Championship, which was played Oct. 4-5 at the Pronghorn Golf Resort in Bend, Ore.

The four-man team of Gregg Guernsey, Kasey Young, Brad Karns and Ty Chambers finished four strokes ahead of a team from Columbia-Edgewater Country Club of Portland.

Royal Oaks recorded a 36-hole score of 6-over-par to win the tournament.

Each team counted its top three scores each of the two days.

This is Royal Oaks’ first OGA Team title since the club was established in 1945. A total of 36 teams from Oregon and Southwest Washington were entered in the tournament.

In the individual competition for medalist, Young tied for first at even-par 144 and Guernsey tied for third at 146.

Boxers tested at local amateur show

Efren Estrada defeated Lorenzo Caldera in a 132-pound feature bout to cap a seven-bout amateur boxing show on Saturday at JRT Boxing and MMA in Vancouver.

Caldera, a 17-year-old Parkrose, Ore., resident who now trains at JRT Boxing, was a bronze medalist in the 2011 National Junior Olympics.

Estrada also is among the top ranked young boxers in the country, according to Jack Thompson, who staged Saturday’s fights at his recently-opened gym.

Jose Gonzalez of Vancouver, who trains at JRT Boxing, won his 70-pound bout against Willie Mendoza of Chief Cornerstone from Hillsboro, Ore.

Another Vancouver boxer, Malakai Charemsouk who trains at Fisticuffs, won his 80-pound bout against Charlie Lopez of Portland.

The other winners during Saturday’s show were Sammy Villalta of West Portland Boxing Club (115 pounds), Saul Diaz of Chief Cornerstone (140 pounds), Jesus Munez of West Portland Boxing (160 pounds), and Jacob Torres from Capital Boxing of Beaverton (110 pounds).

One week earlier, two young boxers who train at JRT Boxing and MMA won their divisions during the Thurston County Police Activities Boxing Championships.

Lorenzo Caldera, 17, won two bouts to claim the title in the 132-pound weight class for experienced fighters. Connor Morales, 15, stepped up in weight and won his two bouts in the 152 pound division for novice fighters.

Caldera was voted the outstanding senior boxer and Morales won the award for the outstanding junior boxer during the event at the Nisqually Youth Center.

Bowling awards banquet Saturday

The Clark County chapter of the United States Bowling Congress will hold its 2012 Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Elks Lodge in Vancouver.

Local players lead Timbers Academy

The Portland Timbers Academy fell 1-0 to Real Salt Lake-AZ on Saturday despite strong performances from a trio of players from Clark County.

Midfielder Foster Langsdorf of Vancouver, forward James Nosack of Ridgefield, Wash., and goalkeeper Collin Partee of Camas were singled out by coaches for their play in the contest at Case Grande. Ariz.

Real Salt Lake-AZ won the match on an 86th-minute goal, dropping the Timbers Academy U-18s to 1-3-2 on the season.

In the under-16 match, the Timbers and Real Salt Lake-AZ played to a 1-1 draw.

The Timbers Academy teams next play host to Crossfire Premier from Redmond on Nov. 3, at the Adidas Timbers Training Center in Beaverton.
