In 2009 Washington state voters approved the “everything but marriage” law granting same-sex couples all the same rights as marries couples. Same-sex couples have the same legal rights as married couples. Approving Referendum 74 grants same-sex couples few new rights but instead redefines marriage for all of society.
People are free to live as they choose, but they nor those in authority who have a personal vested interest are not free to redefine marriage for everyone else. This referendum is in response to the passing of a Senate Bill 6239, in which Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, seized the 2009 approval to advocate what was always the end goal: to redefine marriage.
“Marriage is … in its origin a contract of natural law. … It is the parent, and not the child of society; the source of civility and a sort of seminary of the republic,” said U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, in “Commentaries on the Conflict of Laws,” first published in 1833.
