HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Jeremiah Schwartz ran for two touchdowns and 188 yards for Hampton, as the Pirates held on to keep Savannah State winless in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 21-13 victory Saturday.

Preston McCarthy’s 28-yard field goal put Savannah State ahead 3-0 in the opening quarter, but that would be the team’s last lead. It was all Pirates (2-5, 2-3) for the next two quarters, scoring via touchdown runs of 61 and 1 yards from Schwartz and a 12-yard rush by Antonio McCloude for a 21-3 Hampton lead.

Juwhan Arnold-Smith’s 1-yard TD scamper and McCarthy’s 29-yard kick pulled Savannah State (1-7, 0-5) within the final margin, but it wasn’t enough.

Savannah State’s only win this season came versus Edwards Waters of the NAIA, and the Tigers’ campaign was also marked by being dubbed a record 70.5-point underdog against Florida State on their trip to Tallahassee Sept. 8 — a 55-0 loss.
