NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt will be honored before the Tennessee Titans’ season opener Sunday against the New England Patriots.
Summitt will be recognized as the “12th Titan” before the game.
Titans’ owner Bud Adams will donate $25,000 to the Pat Summitt Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Summitt stepped down as Tennessee’s coach in April after leading the Lady Vols to eight national titles in 38 seasons. She announced in August 2011 that she has early-onset dementia.
Summitt remains at the university as head coach emeritus. Her 1,098 career wins are the most of any men’s or women’s basketball coach in NCAA history.
