Samford scores early, takes down West Alabama 34-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Samford rolled to a 25 point halftime lead and cruised to a 34-6 victory against West Alabama on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (2-0) amassed 227 yards rushing and rolled up 452 yards of total offense to control the game.

West Alabama’s Kyle Caldwell and Gary Johnston combined for more yards passing than Samford, 227-225, but they also combined for three interceptions, and Caldwell was sacked five times. Samford’s defense held West Alabama (1-1) to 21 yards rushing for a .7-yard average.

The Bulldogs, members of the Southern Conference, are 10-6-1 all-time against West Alabama (Gulf South Conference).

Fabian Truss rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and Cameron Yaw kicked two third-quarter field goals. Jeremiah Gates and Stanley Robinson rushed for touchdowns of 2 and 8 yards respectively for the Bulldogs.

West Alabama’s Ryne Smith kicked field goals of 22 and 29 yards.
