LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith was taken off the field on a stretcher after being injured in the fourth quarter against Toledo on Saturday.

Smith was injured at the end of an 11-yard scramble to the Toledo 5-yard line with 6:22 remaining in the game. A Toledo defender appeared to grab Smith by his collar while another Rockets player came in late and hit Smith in the head as he went out of bounds.

Smith reached up with his right arm but then went limp. Medical personnel strapped Smith to a backboard, immobilized his head and legs and then carted him off on a stretcher.

As he was wheeled away, Smith lifted his right arm and gave a thumbs-up.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

Toledo was penalized for a personal foul on the play.
