NEW YORK (AP) — Braves third baseman Chipper Jones is out of the starting lineup for his last game in New York against the Mets, a bittersweet finish against the team he’s tormented throughout his 19 seasons in the major leagues.

Jones says he told manager Fredi Gonzalez on Saturday night that he needed the day off, but now says he’s feeling better.

Jones says he’ll “be pleading to be the first guy off the bench today for my last at-bat,” despite the soreness that sidelined him against the team he’s always seemed to enjoy a lot of success against.

The retiring slugger has 49 homers in 241 games against the Mets.
