UPDATE: Crews fighting Mt. Adams fire

Firefighters on Monday are working to finish up efforts to contain a fire near While Salmon and just getting started fighting another fire near Mt. Adams.

Mt. Adams fire

The fire started by a lightning strike in the Mount Adams Wilderness Area on Saturday burned actively overnight Sunday, according to officials.

The Cascade Creek Fire burned an estimated 1,000 acres of heavy and dead Lodgepole Pine Sunday. Forty hikers were evacuated and four were airlifted out by helicopter, according to a Gifford Pinchot National Forest release.

Crews will continue to battle the blaze on Monday using three helicopters and other equipment.

Highway 141 fire

Evacuations were lifted on Monday morning in the Highway 141 fire burning between White Salmon and Husum, which is 75 percent contained.

Around 600 people on Monday will continue mop up work on the fire and will start to de-mobilize Tuesday, spokeswoman Mary Bean said. Equipment on the fire includes six helicopters, 12 water tenders and “numerous” fire engines, according to an update from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Winds limited the helicopters’ use on Sunday and they may be sent to fight other fires in the state Monday, the release said.

There was no rain overnight Sunday, but skies were grey on Monday morning, Bean said.

Rain on Saturday helped in the effort to quell the blaze but lightning strikes Saturday were worrisome, Bean said.

There were no injuries reported until Monday, when a firefighter sustained a sprained ankle, DNR said.

Evacuations were lifted just before 10 a.m. Monday.
