SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Mike Conway has asked to sit out the IndyCar season finale at Auto Club Speedway and will be replaced in Saturday night’s race by Wade Cunningham.

Conway told AJ Foyt Racing he is not comfortable racing on ovals and no longer wishes to compete on them. Conway missed most of the 2010 season with injuries suffered in a serious accident at Indianapolis, and was in an accident there again this year.

Team director Larry Foyt says the organization respects Conway for coming forward with his concerns.

Cunningham drove a second entry for Foyt in this year’s Indianapolis 500, finishing 31st. He arrived at Auto Club Speedway on Thursday to be fitted in the car. He won the Indy Lights race at Fontana in 2005, his championship season.
