Old Evergreen Highway — The late Marie Evans Day, a longtime Vancouver resident whose Southern charm was evident throughout her time working with local government colleagues and the public, was remembered Sept. 6 with a commemorative rock bench and a 50-year-old southern magnolia witness tree at the Jane Weber Evergreen Arboretum. Day died May 12 at age 56. Louisiana native Marie Evans married Bob Day in 1980 and first visited Vancouver on May 18, the day Mount St. Helens erupted. She worked as assistant to several Vancouver mayors, city managers and council members; after a brief parenting absence from Vancouver, she returned to work at the Clark County Office of Community Development. She later worked at the Port of Vancouver, where she was administrative assistant to the executive director, then a human resource representative. Even after a stroke severely disabled her, she returned to the port as a volunteer. The Weber arboretum is at 9215 S.E. Evergreen Highway.
