ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said his team has “got to play much better as a secondary.”
The Redskins are getting torched for big plays early in the season, largely negating a fine start for rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.
The defensive backs yielded touchdown passes of 73, 59 and 48 yards in Sunday’s 38-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Washington is scoring 33 points per game but allowing 33.7 points per game.
Cornerback DeAngelo Hall said Monday the defense used to be happy when the offense scored 24 points. He says it’s “definitely frustrating” to see the offense score more and have the defense “totally drop the ball.”
The Redskins are 1-2. They visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week.
