Smith, Creveling win times at speedskating meet

KEARNS, Utah (AP) — World Cup bronze medalist Jessica Smith won the women’s nine-lap time trial, and Chris Creveling finished first in the men’s time trial on opening day of the U.S. Single Distance Short Track Championships on Thursday.

Smith of Melvindale, Mich., won in 1:30.260, followed by Sarah Chen of San Marino, Calif., in 1:32.893 and Tamara Fredrick of Park Ridge, Ill., in 1:33.113.

Creveling of Kintnersville, Pa., won the men’s time trial in 1:23.987, followed by Olympian JR Celski of Federal Way, Wash., in 1:24.113. Keith Carroll of Philadelphia was third in 1:24.629.

Smith also won the 4-lap time trial in 39.849, followed by Olympian Lana Gehring of Northbrook, Ill., in 40.382. Chen took third.

Creveling topped the men’s 4-lapper in 37.191. Carroll was second at 37.282 and Olympian Simon Cho of Baltimore was third at 37.305.
