FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr threw for 536 yards and five touchdowns to make Fresno State’s first Mountain West Conference game a success in a 52-40 victory against San Diego State on Saturday night.

Carr completed 42 of 56 passes for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0). He is the fourth quarterback in school history to throw for over 500 yards in a game, the first since his brother, David, threw for 531 yards in the 2001 Silicon Valley Classic bowl game against Michigan State.

Leon McFadden’s 96-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Aztecs (2-3, 0-1) a 40-36 lead with 9:09 remaining in the third quarter. But Carr hit Isaiah Burse with a 31-yard scoring toss to give Fresno State the lead back, 43-40. After a Bulldogs field goal, Carr found Rashad Evans for a 5-yard TD pass for the final margin.

Fresno State had three 100-yard receivers: Evans had 10 catches for 100 yards and three TDs, Josh Harper nine for 120 yards and a score, and Davante Adams eight for 102 yards.

Ryan Katz passed for 160 yards and two touchdowns and led San Diego State rushers with 89 yards on 13 carries, including a 67-yarder.
