ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Austin Lopez kicked four field goals to complement a strong defensive effort as San Jose State blanked Navy 12-0 on Saturday, marking the first time in six years that the Midshipmen have been shut out.
Lopez’s kicks came from 29, 19, 32 and 43 yards as the Spartans failed to score a touchdown despite gaining 388 yards against the Navy defense.
Lopez, a freshman, is now 9 for 9 on field goal attempts this season. The 43-yard field goal matched his season-long.
The shutout was the first for San Jose State since a 29-0 win over Grambling State to open the 2003 season. It also marked the first time since Oct. 20, 2006, that Navy (1-3) has failed to score.
The 4-1 start by the Spartans is their best since 2006, when they went to the New Mexico Bowl. The last time Navy opened the season 1-3 was in 2002.
