NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk State says men’s basketball coach Anthony Evans has resigned, and a person familiar with the situation says he has accepted the same position at Florida International.

The person requested anonymity because an official announcement is not expected at FIU until Tuesday.

Evans spent six seasons at Norfolk State and last season guided the Spartans to 26 victories and their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship. As a No. 15 seed in their first NCAA tournament, they upset Missouri before falling to Florida.

The Spartans went 16-0 in the MEAC during the regular season this year, but lost their opener in the conference tournament.

Norfolk State says associate head coach Robert Jones will serve as interim coach next season.
