Letter: Benton tainted by ALEC membership

The Columbian
Published: April 28, 2013, 5:00pm

State Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, is a Washington state co-chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, a group funded by the Koch brothers. At a recent town hall meeting, I asked Benton about his affiliation with ALEC and he acknowledged he is a co-chair. The organization has an extreme agenda for our country, including limiting voting rights and women’s rights and monopolizing the media information we receive. To that end, the Koch brothers are now looking to purchase several major newspapers.

We need to be vigilant citizens who pay attention to the course our elected representatives are taking, as that course impacts us and the quality of our lives. Benton should be focusing on the needs of our state and not on the agendas of billionaire brothers. His lack of judgment in this regard makes me question his judgment in general.
