FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Brandon Allen begins this season as the likely starting quarterback at Arkansas, and he’s eager to put any doubts about his ability to rest.

Allen saw limited action last season as a redshirt freshman, finishing 21-of-49 passing for 186 yards while filling in for the injured Tyler Wilson. That included a 10-of-18 effort in a 52-0 loss to No. 1 Alabama, a game Allen’s teammates say isn’t a full representation of the sophomore’s talent.

Allen competed with Brandon Mitchell for the starting position in the spring. After Allen was named to the top spot on the depth chart by new coach Bret Bielema, Mitchell transferred to North Carolina State.

Arkansas opens its season against Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31.
