Portland Fire & Rescue battled a yacht fire Thursday afternoon on Hayden Island, east of the Jantzen Beach shopping area.

Investigators say the fire was started on the 30-foot-yacht when someone tried to transfer fuels onto the boat. An electrical malfunction on the boat ignited the fuel.

The yacht was docked at 118 N. Tomahawk Island Drive in a community of floating homes. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent homes and boats.

Early Thursday afternoon, Vancouver motorists could see a large plume of black smoke across the river.
