GRAYS HARBOR — A passing boat rescued four people off the coast Monday before the Coast Guard made it to the scene.

The Coast Guard said it dispatched a helicopter and a boat after learning of a mayday call about 12 miles west of Grays Harbor.

The four people were taken aboard the vessel Carmelita, The Daily Astorian reported. All four had been wearing life jackets.

It was not known how they ended up in the water.
